Europe’s Industry. Europe’s Jobs. Our Future.
Europe’s automotive industry is at a crossroads. Across the continent, restructuring, plant closures and job cuts are putting hundreds of thousands of good industrial jobs — and the communities and supply chains that depend on them — at risk.
But this crisis is not inevitable. For years, Europe’s carmakers generated substantial profits and rewarded shareholders, while investment in production, skills and affordable clean technologies failed to keep pace. Now workers are being asked to pay the price for strategic decisions they did not make.
industriAll Europe is mobilising workers and trade unions across Europe to demand a different future for the automotive industry: one built on investment, good jobs and strong European value chains. We are calling on companies to invest in Europe’s industrial future and on political leaders to ensure that public support comes with binding social conditions.
Enough is enough. Europe needs an automotive transition that invests in its workers, strengthens its industries and keeps good jobs in Europe.
Our demands to policymakers:
- LINK PUBLIC SUPPORT TO BINDING CONDITIONS
European and national public support for automotive companies should be conditional on measurable commitments covering investment, employment, collective bargaining, reskilling and protection against relocation.
Publicly supported funds should not be used to finance dividends or share buybacks where agreed investment or employment commitments are not being met.
Effective clawback provisions should apply when companies fail to fulfil the conditions attached to public support. - MOBILISE EUROPEAN DEMAND TO STRENGTHEN EUROPEAN PRODUCTION
Europe has significant tools at its disposal to accelerate fleet renewal while supporting its industrial base.
Corporate fleets, public procurement and social leasing can help stimulate demand for cleaner vehicles while creating greater certainty for investment in European production and supply chains.
These instruments should be designed to maximise European added value, industrial investment and quality employment. - SECURE STRATEGIC VALUE CHAINS IN EUROPE
Europe should establish the conditions for strategic automotive capabilities to remain and develop within the EU.
This includes raw materials, batteries, power electronics, software and vehicle assembly, supported by investment in innovation, skills and infrastructure.
The objective should be resilient European value chains capable of competing globally while meeting high social and environmental standards. - MAKE EUROPEAN ADDED VALUE A CORE INDUSTRIAL-POLICY OBJECTIVE
European public policy should actively support vehicles and technologies that generate substantial value within Europe.
Our demands to management:
- STOP THE BLEED
Halt the job cuts and demands for worker concessions. We need a serious plan to save industry. - INVEST IN OUR COMMON FUTURE NOW
Rather than maximizing profits, ensure that sites, RDI and skills are invested in. It’s a corporate choice if technology leadership is abandoned. - TAKE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS WORKERS AND OUR COMMUNITIES
Worker participation and strong industrial relations are fundamental to deliver the proactive industrial policies needed to maintain and transform European industry. Companies must respect collective agreements, information and consultation rights - DON’T TALK DOWN EUROPE
