Every worker has the right for a safe and healthy workplace. This is a fundamental human right! - Luc Triangle

Three industriAll Europe affiliates FIOM-CGIL, FIM-CISL and UILM-UIL held a general strike for all metal workers of the city of Milan and Lombardy Region on 19 January with a rally in the afternoon starting from San Babila square to attract public attention to the problem of poor health and safety at work.

The Italian affiliates of industriAll Europe FIOM-CGIL, FIM-CISL and UILM-UIL have decried the large number of fatalities at the workplace each year, calling for “Basta Morti sul lavoro!” (No more deaths at work!). The circumstances and accountability for the accident are yet to be clarified by an official inquiry, but unions state it is clear that working conditions are worsening at the majority of factories in the country, while working time and pace are increasing and health and safety procedures are often disregarded.

FIOM-CGIL, FIM-CISL and UILM-UIL demand concrete actions to prevent, once and for all, all deaths in the workplace. Through the rally in Milan, the three unions reconfirmed their strong commitment and resolution to guaranteeing safety, rights and dignity in every workplace and industriAll Europe stands behind them in this endeavour.

General Secretary of industriAll Europe, Luc Triangle, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased workers and reiterated industriAll Europe’s demand for safe working conditions for all workers across Europe. “IndustriAll Europe will continue to make occupational health and safety a priority to ensure no further casualties in the workplace”, he said.
