We continue to work with veterans and pensioners – the exact liquidators of the Chornobyl catastrophe, who remain members of our trade union.
The Chornobyl NPP workers, who in April 1986 laid down their lives and health to protect the whole world from the spread of radiation and the consequences of radioactive contamination, probably would not have been able to believe in the modern Russian-Ukrainian war.
Ukraine has passed this stage of the history with dignity. The names of the heroes who died in the liquidation of the accident are inscribed in the history of Ukraine and the world nuclear energy eternally.
But the threat of a large-scale nuclear disaster loomed over Ukraine and the world for the second time.
In February-March 2022, the Russian Federation occupied nuclear facilities (Chornobyl NPP, Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and Zaporizhzhia NPP), causing the threats of a nuclear catastrophe for the second time!
In February 2025, the Russian Federation attacked the confinement over the destroyed 4th reactor of Chornobyl NPP by the special drone, a 15-meter hole destroyed a unique confinement - structure, funds for which came from all over the world. Since the beginning of the invasion, at least 92 flights of Russian UAVs (drones) have been recorded in the immediate vicinity of the confinement over the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP.
The occupation of the largest European nuclear power plant of the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the city of Enerhodar is another example of unprecedented nuclear terrorism. The transformation of an operating nuclear facility into a military base, the forced russification of residents of the city, and making of ZNPP employees into hostages.
14 ZNPP workers, our trade union members, and more than 40 residents of Enerhodar were abducted from their jobs, homes, transport, and sentenced by the Russian Federation on false charges to 20-25 years in Russian prisons.
The goal is to break the pro-Ukrainian position, to intimidate all ZNPP employees who could not leave city or stayed to work at the plant.
The Nuclear Power and Industry Workers’ Union of Ukraine (Atomprofspilka) calls on the world:
- To take all measures to prevent the further nuclear terrorism by the Russian Federation
- To continue imposing economic and political sanctions on the Russian Federation, in particular on the Russian nuclear operator Rosatom.
- To ensure the release of illegally imprisoned ZNPP workers!
- To demand the responsibility of the Russian Federation for all crimes during the Russian-Ukrainian war in Ukraine. Fight Russian aggression by all available methods.
Ukraine will win! Ukrainian nuclear energy workers will be resilient and contribute to the victory over the enemy!
