As we celebrate International Workers' Day 2023, we recognise the ongoing struggles faced by workers across Europe. From the ongoing war in Ukraine, to the cost of living crisis, attacks on trade union rights and our fight for a green and digital transition that is fair for all, it is clear that we have a long way to go.

Despite some positive economic indicators, the cost of living crisis continues, with wages still lagging behind inflation. Workers continue to be squeezed, even though falling energy prices are slowly bringing down inflation. Companies, on the other hand, are pocketing profits rather than investing in much-needed green initiatives and a Just Transition.

So it should come as no surprise for anyone that mobilisations are continuing across Europe. Workers are taking to the streets to demand change and they must be listened to.

We are seeing a rise in attacks on trade union rights across Europe. We must stand firm in our commitment to workers' rights and fight against any attempts to restrict workers’ ability to organise and bargain collectively.

It is clear that trade unions will continue to be at the forefront of the fight for social justice and a fairer redistribution of profits to workers. Our 'Together. In Action. For Higher Wages' campaign is a European response to this struggle and our demands are more valid than ever.

The war in Ukraine continues, with no clear end in sight. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, our trade union brothers and sisters, and demand an immediate end to the violence. It is unacceptable that innocent civilians continue to suffer. The only way forward is peace. We must work together to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and create a fairer, safer and more equitable world for all.

As we approach the Mid-Term Conference of industriAll Europe on 31 May and 1 June, we have the opportunity to discuss and set strategic priorities for the next two years. Looking ahead, our federation will focus on building and strengthening its membership base. We need to mobilise our members into action and build trade union power for a Just Transition with strong, sustainable industrial jobs in Europe, for fair pay and working conditions, and for European solidarity and peace.

Let us use this day to renew our commitment to peace, solidarity, and a better, sustainable future for all.

In solidarity!
